What's an editor exactly?  It turns out that there are a whole bunch of editors involved in the crafting of a traditionally published book.  This excellent breakdown made me understand why Self Publishing is... so much faster.  Less indians, and just one Chief.  On the other hand the one Chief gets no help at all and can make huge mistakes.
